Destiny 2 Announces Plans to Put Slumping Game Mode on Hiatus

New details have emerged about Destiny 2’s upcoming Edge of Fate expansion, and it appears that Bungie is preparing to make some big changes to vendors and game modes. As the expansion’s release draws closer, Bungie continues to share new details, as well as clarify how the original version of Destiny 2 will transform in the future.

With the arrival of Edge of Fate, some of the key mechanics of Destiny 2 are set to undergo significant changes. Earlier, the studio confirmed that the game’s armor system is getting an upgrade, which will include features like set bonuses and a new tier system that will offer better stats and additional features. This week, the studio announced changes to major gear vendors like Ada-1 and Banshee-44. Ada-1 will now allow players to focus on specific exotic armor, while Banshee-44 will sell legacy weapons so players can complete their collection. However, among these changes, the biggest change will probably be seen in the game modes that are currently available in Destiny 2.

Gambit was originally introduced with Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion, which added a unique game mode to the PvPvE genre. The mode was initially very popular with players due to its novelty and strategic depth. However, things changed over time, with the mode slowly growing stale due to the lack of new updates over a long period of time, and it seemed like Bungie had almost completely ignored it. Even though Gambit still has a dedicated player base, many fans today wonder what heights the mode could have reached in Destiny 2 if it had received continued support and new updates.

Destiny 2 Placing Gambit on Hiatus

Unfortunately, it appears fans won’t get the chance to learn much about Gambit’s future for the time being, as Bungie has confirmed that the mode will go on hiatus following the launch of the Edge of Fate expansion. While Gambit will still be playable and continue to offer legacy rewards via the Director’s Worlds tab, the studio has no plans to update it with new content or gear in the near future. Despite this, Bungie has also made it clear that this isn’t the complete end of the mode. The blog post assures that when the time comes, Gambit will be brought back to the forefront with new rewards and mechanics — just like players last experienced in Drifter’s Season of the Gambit Prime.

Gambit isn’t the only Legacy activity being temporarily paused following the launch of Edge of Fate. Bungie has also confirmed that Iron Banner will also be sidelined for the time being with the major update Ashes and Iron coming in September. However, the studio hasn’t provided any clear details on the reasons behind this change or what kind of improvements or restructuring they plan to make to Iron Banner in the future. In its place, Bungie is introducing a new Crucible mode Cutting Edge, which will limit players loadouts to only seasonal gear and exotic weapons. The mode will also see the return of Heavy Metal, which is expected to add a new dimension to the PvP experience.
