Call of Duty Just Experienced a Massive Server Outage

Recently, Call of Duty’s main servers suffered a massive outage that left Black Ops 6, Warzone, Modern Warfare 3, and other major titles offline for around 30 minutes. Fortunately, the Call of Duty team responded quickly and brought the servers back online soon after. However, many fans were left waiting in frustration during this time, as nearly every modern Call of Duty game was affected by this mysterious outage.

While such server outages are rare, the recent incident has only reinforced players’ pre-existing concerns about the Call of Duty HQ app. For those unaware, Activision began using a central app called Call of Duty HQ to integrate all new Call of Duty titles since 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot. The app houses everything from recent games in the Black Ops series to Warzone, and the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy on a single platform. While this integrated system was intended to offer convenience, over the years it has come under fire for its clunky user interface and excessive storage consumption. This week’s server crash has further highlighted these problems, and many fans believe Activision should now reconsider this centralized system.

Call of Duty HQ Just Went Offline

On June 24 (or June 25 depending on your timezone), Call of Duty suffered a massive server outage that temporarily took major titles like Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Warzone offline. The Call of Duty team was quick to report the issue, and confirmed on the CODUpdates Twitter account that they were investigating issues that were preventing players from connecting to the game servers. Shortly after, the team announced that services were slowly stabilizing and players could reconnect. Previously, such a massive outage was seen in April, when Warzone servers were intentionally taken offline ahead of the return of Verdansk. However, this time the outage was unplanned, which has left many players wondering what exactly is going on behind the scenes.

The recent outage initially seemed to only affect titles connected to the Call of Duty HQ app, but Twitter user Detonated was quick to notice that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile had also gone offline. It’s still unclear if Activision suffered a cyberattack or if this was an internal technical glitch. While titles under Call of Duty HQ being affected simultaneously might be expected, the outage of Black Ops 4, a seven-year-old game that’s only available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, makes the whole matter all the more mysterious.

Fans are hoping that the recent server outage will not impact Call of Duty’s much-awaited Season 4 Reloaded update, which is speculated to launch in the coming days. Not much information has been revealed about this mid-season update at the moment, but Activision has recently revealed that the update will include a new collaboration between Call of Duty and Beavis & Butt-Head. As part of this crossover, players will be able to unlock and use these iconic cartoon characters as new Operator skins.
